Practical ways to use MoonMoon bags

The main pouches are very flexible, and can be used to store everything from fruit to batches of soups to whole loaves. They press flat when empty. Yet stand tall when full. They also seal tight to lock in freshness. This has the added bonus of preventing food waste. And over time, saves money as you don’t have to buy clingfilm (not good stuff, as the nurdles end up on ocean floors, and look like fish food to marine creatures).
You can recycle clean clingfilm you no longer wish to use at most supermarket bag bins (used clingfilm has to be binned.
- Fill small pouches with nuts, grapes, or carrot sticks.
- Use medium bags to store bread and fillings.
- Use to store salad and tomatoes
- Freeze (cooled) soups and sauces.
- Decant grains, pasta and dried fruit into bags.Use in the oven or air-fryer up to 230 degrees
- Use to store toiletries or wet swimwear!
Expel extra air before sealing, to reduce bulk and freeze liquids flat, then stand upright once frozen. Don’t overfill these bags if freezing or using in the oven.
The leakproof options have silicone lids, and are sold in various sizes, perfect for meal prep, freezing leftovers or even weaning pots. The larger sizes are ideal for packed lunches, the smaller sizes can fit inside to hold dips, dressing, sauce or yoghurts.

How to clean silicone food bags

You can pop them on the top rack of a dishwasher (open to avoid pooled water). Or just wash by hand with warm soapy water, then rinse and dry upside down. For odours, just soak in warm water with baking soda or a little cleaning vinegar, then wash as normal.
Why choose silicone over single-use plastic?
Single-use plastic bags and clingfilm both create huge waste and are bad for the planet and marine creatures, when items end up in our waterways (nurdles used to create clingfilm look like fish food to them).
Although you can recycle most soft plastics (and clean clingfilm) at supermarket bag bins, it’s still a faff to do so. And used clingfilm cannot be recycled.
New laws to remove certain chemicals (like PVC) means that ‘newer clingfilm’ does not even stick that way, so is a waste of money. Many people are also concerned at leaching plastic particles into food, when wrapped. And of course single-use always costs you more money, long-term.
