How to keep food fresh (without plastic film)
![]()
MoonMoon silicone food bags are fabulous! They are food-safe, lasts for years and easily recycled at end of use. Silicone acts like plastic, but isn’t! Save money on disposable plastic wrap. Sold in various sizes.
Clingfilm is not polluting to sell, but bad to make, as it releases ‘nurdles’ into waste streams, which look like fish food and mean marine creatures end up eating plastic.

Before recycling cans, rinse/remove lids (pop ring-pulls over holes). Then step on upper cans to ‘pinch’ inner rims together, to deter inquisitive wildlife.

Vegan wax wraps (to cover food or bowls)

These vegan wax food wraps are sold in a set of 3 large 12 inch square wraps, ideal to cover bowls, wrap sandwiches, store bread, fruit, vegetables and snacks. Also good to keep unsafe foods (like citrus) away from pets.
Made using a vegan-friendly wax coating, they become soft to mould with the warmth of your hands, creating a breathable seal around food and containers. Ideal to replace plastic wrap.
Not for nut allergies. Due to flammable tree resin, keep away from heat (microwaves, dishwasher, ignitions, ovens). And pets, due to pine wax. Do not use for meat/fish, as they cannot be washed to kill bacteria.
How to use vegan food wraps
Just use the warmth of your hands to shape the wrap around food or containers. Once cool, it will hold its shape naturally.
Vegan food wraps should last up to a year. At end of use, just bin to naturally return to the earth. These wraps are made with cotton fabric, vegan soy wax, jojoba oil and pine resin.
How to care for vegan food wraps
Hand-wash gently in cool water with mild soap and air-dry. Avoid using heat or hot water.
Refresh with the vegan wax wrap refresher. Just place the block in a glass bowl over a pan of hot water to melt, then place your wrap on an oven tray lined with parchment paper.
Use a (clean) paintbrush to apply the melted wax mix to your wrap, and pop the wrap in the oven for a couple of minutes to distribute. The wrap will be very hot. Leave to cool on a tray.
Freshglow (keeps produce and bread fresh)

Freshglow (a USA company) was inspired by the founder’s grandmother who used organic spices to keep food fresh. These are sheets of reusable paper (for fruits, vegetables, bread and cheese) impregnated with a blend of organic spices, to keep food fresher for longer. Just drop a sheet into the crisper drawer (or under fruit in a bowl). One sheet should last four weeks.
Keep away from children and pets. Food wraps are not vegan.
The organic botanicals help to stop bacterial and fungal growth, helping produce to last two to four times longer. One ingredient is fenugreek, so the sheets smell a little like maple syrup.
It’s rarely sold in England but wholesale orders are welcome (Lakeland sell something similar, but it may not be of the same quality).
FreshPaper bread saver sheets

FreshPaper Bread Saver Sheets are based on the same idea. Again just drop a sheet into the bread bin (or a container with baked goods) to keep them fresher for longer. One pack of 8 sheets should last around 3 months.
Never give stale bread (nor crackers or pizza crust) to garden birds or wildfowl, due to choking hazards or mould. Also don’t give leftover sandwiches, as salt can harm and butter can smear on feathers, affecting waterproofing and insulation.
24 million slices of bread are thrown away each day in the UK alone. You could of course visit a baker to only buy what you need (or just toast slices straight from the freezer).
