These alternatives to clingfilm & foil are ideal, for a zero waste lifestyle. Aluminium foil is wasteful, although it can be recycled. But clingfilm is very polluting to make, and can’t be recycled. Even supermarkets (that take most plastic packaging in their bins) won’t take clingfilm. Switch over to these instead.
- Helen Round Reusable Bowl Covers (Cornwall) are made in Helen’s Cornish studio. In Duck Egg Blue or Natural, pop them around bowls of half-finished food. The set includes 3 covers made from quality linen, which you can use on the worktop or in the fridge. Pop in the machine to wash, then use again.
- Fresh Thinking Co Silicone Food Covers are sold in a set of 6. They look like Tupperware covers, but again are made from food-grade (don’t eat it!) silicone, derived from sand. Although not biodegradable, it takes a lot longer to break down, so is less likely to break into microplastics. Dishwasher-safe, use a baking soda paste for stains (don’t use abrasive scrubbers). Silicone storage bags are ideal for juicy berries or veggie stock.
- Fresh Thinking Co Silicone Food Huggers are not biodegradable, but are designed to last for life. Just use them to easily half-cut food (like apples, tomatoes, onions) and they form a natural seal (they also work on top of half-finished bottles, for the fridge). They are sold in 4 sizes to nest together, and safe for the dishwasher.
